About SALCBC

Established in 2019, the South Asian Legal Clinic of BC (“SALCBC”) is a non-profit organization focused on issues affecting the daily lives of South Asian British Columbians, including legal issues around immigration status, child protection and custody, separation and divorce, domestic violence, sexual assault, racial discrimination and profiling, economic justice for workers, elder abuse, mental health, and wills and estates.

Using an equity-based approach rooted in intersectional feminism and anti-oppressive values, SALCBC aims to engage in the following activities:

  • Conducting free, not-for-profit, multilingual legal advice and information clinics for low-income British Columbians who identify as South Asian and with equity-seeking groups;

  • Educating British Columbians who self-identify as South Asian about their legal rights through legal education seminars;

  • Undertaking legal research and advocacy on proposed government legislation and policies that disproportionately and/or negatively affect British Columbians who identify as South Asian; and,

  • Providing legal resources for community-based organizations and facilitate grassroots community organizing efforts for British Columbians who identify as South Asian.


The Opportunity

SALCBC is seeking qualified candidates to apply for their inaugural Executive Director position. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing strategic direction and impact, staff and volunteers, fundraising and donor relations, operations, communications, and advocacy.

The Executive Director will take the reins from the Board of Directors and build on the existing momentum towards establishing presence and improving access to justice for South Asians in British Columbia. The goal of this position is to sustain and grow SALCBC to become a provincially established legal non-profit with both in-person and virtual legal advice and information services.

The initial priorities for the Executive Director will include raising SALCBC’s profile within the legal, social services, and overall community, confirming a physical space for service delivery, building upon community partnerships, recruiting additional volunteer lawyers for the pro-bono clinic roster, and identifying fundraising opportunities to increase SALCBC’s overall impact.

Specific accountabilities include:

Operational Leadership

  • Coordinating SALCBC services for community organizations involving clinic lawyers, staff and volunteers

  • Drafting and/or implementing policies as directed by the Board and applicable legislation

  • Planning, developing, and implementing activities that improve and enhance employment, social participation and justice outcomes among South Asian community members in accordance with the Strategic Plan

  • Monitoring and reporting on organizational metrics and performance across operations, services and other activities

  • Developing various reports, operational plans, financial statements, etc., and attending regular Board meetings, as required

People Leadership

  • Establishing and modeling HR practices that are equity-based and rooted in intersectional feminism and anti-oppressive values, and that promote balance, wellbeing and collaboration across the organization

  • Leading and coaching employees to develop confidence and realize their full unique potential

Financial Management

  • Identifying as a priority grant and funding opportunities and leading grant writing and fundraising for the organization

  • Monitoring and ensuring all grant and other contractual requirements are being met on an ongoing basis

  • Developing and monitoring financial budgets, including establishing controls and detailed Board reporting

Outreach and Funder Relations

  • Continuously building and expanding relationships with community, business, funders, supporters, other clinics and agencies, partners, regulatory bodies and the general public

  • Liaising with Board and staff members,  and other organizations working on social justice issues affecting South Asians, on SALCBC and joint initiatives, communications, outreach, and public engagement

  • Developing policy positions and proposals for legislative reform, and supporting advocacy activities

  • Overseeing all public communications from the clinic, including overseeing the development of educational and promotional materials and social media strategies to communicate issues and community concerns

  • Acting as a spokesperson for SALCBC on local radio and other media, and engaging in workshops, webinars and other public events on behalf of the organization


Essential Qualities and Experience

SALCBC invites all leaders with relevant backgrounds to apply, though priority will be given to candidates who identify as South Asian and those who meet the following qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of leadership experience in community-based settings

  • An educational background in law, social services, management, public administration, or a related field is preferred

  • Experience and/or strong understanding of law practice management and/or non-profit management

  • Knowledge and ability to serve diverse clients with a trauma-informed approach

  • Demonstrable alignment with the organization’s mission, culture, and core values of being anti-oppressive, feminist, community based and participatory

  • Experience and/or strong understanding of human rights and social justice issues within South Asian communities in BC, especially as they relate to immigration status, child protection and custody, separation and divorce, domestic violence, sexual assault, racial discrimination and profiling, workers’ rights, residential tenancy, elder abuse, mental health, and wills and estates

  • An ability to communicate in a South Asian Language (Punjabi, Urdu, Hindi, etc.) is strongly preferred

  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Compensation and Search Process

Compensation will be commensurate with education, skills and experience, between $85,000 and $110,000 with a competitive health benefits package.

The search process may include conventional shortlist and committee interview stages. We will request for finalists to offer comprehensive references and a complete and thorough background check.
