About BCNPHA 

Formed nearly 30 years ago, BC Non-Profit Housing Association (BCNPHA) is the provincial umbrella organization for the non-profit housing sector comprised of nearly 600 members, including non-profit housing societies, businesses, individuals, partners, and stakeholders. The rapidly growing organization now enjoys 41 staff and a $4M budget. Non-profit housing societies manage more than 70,000 units of long-term, affordable housing in over 2,500 buildings across the province.

BCNPHA is a strong voice for affordable housing in BC and plays a substantial role as a national leader in the sector. They are consistently at the forefront of providing research, advocacy, tools, education, and support for the sector, while working with all levels of government and housing stakeholders to advocate for high management standards and continued development of affordable housing. The Opportunity 

Reporting to the Managing Director, the Director of Finance & Administration is an integral member of the BCNPHA senior leadership team and is responsible for driving the organization’s financials and actively participating in the organization’s overall strategy. The Director is supported by two direct reports—a Financial Controller and an IT Manager—and will work closely with the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, department staff, and external accountants.

The Director of Finance & Administration will strategically lead all financial administration, support HR, and work closely with the IT Manager on systems improvement and innovation as the organization navigates an ongoing period of dynamic growth. On a day-to-day basis, this involves leading all financial planning, forecasting, reporting, policy, and operations, business planning, and budgeting, as well as providing financial support and oversight on BCNPHA ventures.

BCNPHA leadership are required to be based in Metro Vancouver — the office currently operates with a hybrid model.


Key Responsibilities 

Strategic Planning

  • Participate as a key member in strategic and operational discussions within the senior leadership team and collaborate to establish KPIs

  • Deliver strategic recommendations derived from ongoing financial analysis and oversee long-term financial strategy in alignment with the strategic plan

  • Contribute to operational planning, implementation, and the development of business cases for new programs and services

Financial Stewardship

  • Oversee all financial administration, including cash flow and forecasting, budgeting and audit activities, project-based and departmental accounting, as well as the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics

  • Ensure finance staff maintain financial record systems following generally accepted accounting principles

Continuous Systems Improvement

  • With support from the IT Manager, oversee the organization’s systems and IT strategy, as well as all policies and procedures that relate to finance and IT, directing and facilitating the planning, building, testing, and implementation of systemic improvements on an ongoing basis

Collaborative Leadership

  • Develop and manage finance and IT staff and contractors

  • Support HR data management by maintaining the HRIS database and related employee records

  • Engage the Board Finance Committee on trends, changes, and issues in the operating model and operational delivery

  • Engage other members of the senior management team to facilitate cross-departmental collaboration that ensures all financial and IT solutions support BCNPHA’s strategy, operational delivery, and ongoing data collection initiatives


Essential Qualities & Experience 

The ideal candidate will be a strategic, systems-thinking and entrepreneurial accounting professional who is clearly aligned with BCNPHA’s mission of providing a safe, secure, and affordable home for everyone. They should have demonstrated experience leading a finance department within a comparably complex organization, and ideally have directed an IT function or otherwise supported the continuous improvement of organizational systems.  

BCNPHA welcomes credibly experienced leaders to apply for the role, but will prioritize candidates who have: 

  • CPA designation or equivalent experience

  • Five or more years of progressive accounting leadership experience within a comparable organization

  • Experience working within a nonprofit environment and/or serving on a nonprofit Board is required

  • Strong financial modelling, risk, and contract analysis skills

  • Familiarity with government funding models and entrepreneurship within mission-driven settings

  • Experience developing and executing strategic plans and business cases for new programs and services

  • The ability to leverage a range of technologies to support organizational/team efforts

  • Advanced knowledge of business analytics and data-driven decision-making processes. 


Compensation & Search Process 

BCNPHA’s Director of Finance and Administration position is a strategic leadership role and is budgeted to pay competitively within the sector, depending on experience. The salary band is between $112,476 to $135,188, in addition to excellent benefits and RSP matching.

The search process may include conventional longlist, shortlist, and committee interview stages. We will request for finalists to offer comprehensive references, and complete a thorough background check. We expect to complete our first review of applications by September 22, 2023.
